Hosting

I have the opportunity in May to change my web hosting provider since the contract I have with my current provider is running out. I’ve enjoyed ICDSoft so far. It only costs $5 a month, I get 500 MB of space and 7 GB per month for data transfer. They’ve got PHP and most of the other things I need. They’re very rarely down. Best of all, their support people always respond to me within 15 minutes with a very authoritative answer. So I can’t say I dislike being hosted with them.

But sometimes I want more. I see some places have crontab access, shell access, QuickTime streaming, and WebDAV. I begin to drool slightly when I think of these things.

So here’s my question: if you have a website, who’s your host? How have they been? Make me want to change hosts!

Don’t worry, if you have a blog on my server, I’ll take care of all that for you.

Self-hosted at Bethel! Free! All the features I care to install!

Currently Fedora Core 2 or maybe 3? with apache, perl, mysql. Nothing too exciting.

I’m happy with ICDSoft. But I’m less tech-savvy or tech-demanding.

I’ve hosted everything about my domain, including my website, since April of 1999, and have enjoyed every minute of it. Well, except when my hard drive stopped working. Running my own server, or hosting a server on someone else’s connection, only costs whatever the electricity and internet access costs, plus the cost of an older computer (free or cheep). The knowledge that I have gained from this experience has been quite valuable. If you don’t have a high speed connection yourself, you can usually convince someone else to host a machine for you (I know I have room in my basement for another computer).
