I feel like a choreographer again.

Here are some shots from a dance I just finished and performed here in Minneapolis. It’s called Melisma. The program notes were as follows:

CHOREOGRAPHER’S NOTES:
Several years ago a mentor suggested I make a dance called “Perichoresis.” He told me it meant, literally, “to dance around.” It is a Greek word and idea that was used to illuminate the doctrine of the Christian Trinity. When I researched it more I found that perichoresis is more properly translated “going around” or “envelopment.” The Persons of the Trinity “reciprocally contain one another, so that one permanently envelopes and is permanently enveloped by, the other whom he yet envelopes.” (Hilary of Poitiers, Concerning the Trinity). They are not only consummately “with” each other, but “in” each other; three in one, one in three. This dance is the fruit of that suggestion.

I am pretty happy with how the dance turned out. It’s probably the best I’ve choreograhed since “Golfballhunting.” I am disappointed with the photographer as the photographer never got us when we were in action. These were all taken when we were pretty still. It’s an eight minute dance with that begins with two minutes of dancing in silence, then Pedro the Lion’s version of “Be Thou My Vision” rolls in for four minutes, and we dance the last two minutes in silence. It will be an important piece in a concert I hope to choreograph within the next year that will be a critique of Christian culture and a celebration of the real God who is Lord of all. I choreographed a solo, called “We Are Fire.” last Fall that will eventually be an ensemble piece and will probably end the concert. I will be getting a DVD of the show so I’ll see if I can figure out how to get it onto Youtube. I still have a little fiddling to do with it yet, but it’s close.
