I wrote this one the same night I wrote I will bless the Lord<\/em>. I wrote this one first, then the other. That seems fitting to me. Still, I recorded them in the opposite order. Mostly because I didn’t know what I was doing with the harmonica. They do go together, though; the former inspiring the latter. In the spirit of Cash and the harp of Springsteen:<\/p>\n

Night<\/address>\n
a whisper o’er a flame<\/address>\n
a trigger and a knife<\/address>\n
phantom on my side<\/address>\n
Night<\/address>\n
she went and left me ‘lone<\/address>\n
left skin and blood and bone<\/address>\n
colored my whole life<\/address>\n
blisters bled and dried<\/address>\n
wallet harp and comb<\/address>\n
treasures in a tomb<\/address>\n
.<\/span><\/address>\n
<\/address>\n
Sin<\/address>\n
bottles crowd my bed<\/address>\n
balled against the wind<\/address>\n
knees up to my chin<\/address>\n
Sin\u00a0<\/address>\n
breaking for the trench<\/address>\n
but shot to death instead<\/address>\n
I’m pulling back the skin<\/address>\n
to let the fever in<\/address>\n
blackened flesh and stench<\/address>\n
bullet in my head<\/address>\n

Night<\/em><\/address>\n
a man inside the gate<\/address>\n
asking for a light<\/address>\n
malice in his eye<\/address>\n
Night<\/address>\n
treats me like a whore<\/address>\n
swallows up the score<\/address>\n
end my song before it’s time<\/address>\n
I pull out another dime<\/address>\n
climb back out onto the floor<\/address>\n
