In the comments a couple entries ago, someone mentioned a lightbulb-centric riddle I solved during one of the interviews I did for my current job. Many of you have probably already heard it, but for those that haven’t heard this one yet, it does make you feel good when you figure it out. In that spirit, the riddle:
There are two windowless rooms, connected to each other by a door. In one room are three lightswitches, and in the other room are three lightbulbs. Each switch controls one of the three lightbulbs. You are in the room with the lightswitches, and the door is closed. You are allowed to open the door after manipulating the switches and go into the lightbulbs room, but you are not allowed to re-enter the lightswitches room once you leave it.
Which switch controls each bulb?
Rules and suggestions while wrestling with this one:
If you already know the answer, for Pete’s sake, don’t post it in the comments!
If you’re trying to figure out the answer, it’s probably best to not read the comments.
If you figure it out and leave a comment, please type something obvious in ALL CAPS letting people know you’re about to answer it so they don’t read your comment if they don’t want to know the answer yet.
You have no additional supplies with you in the rooms. The answer isn’t a dumb “gotcha” kind of answer like, “See light under the door, blah blah.” It’s straightforward. I’m not sure if my riddlers told me that when they asked this of me, but I think it makes the riddle less frustrating, while still allowing it to be challenging.
Sometimes people think for a minute that I’m rich when they hear I work for a big, internationally-famous company in California and I’m an EPM and a web developer. Well, I’m not rich. I can’t say I’m dirt poor either, but I can claim that I wouldn’t be driving a 1987 Volkswagen Jetta if I had the choice. Let me tell you about my Jetta. Is that alright? Take a seat and listen to my tale of woe.
Last week a lightbulb in my office blew out, as lightbulbs are wont to do. Every day since then, I’ve consistently forgotten to bring a new bulb in from home. Last night, though, was different. I was in the garage taking care of some unfortunate business (attempting to fix my car battery, or taking out the trash, or doing one of those unpleasant tasks one is often relegated to in one’s garage) and I spotted some lightbulbs, and they jogged my memory. So I grabbed two and put them in the car, so I wouldn’t forget.
This morning, I had them in hand as I entered the office. I put one in and twisted the switch.
I immediately wondered what wattage the bulb was, but unfortunately I was now blind and couldn’t read the printing on the bulb. When my vision came back, I realized by looking at the second, identical bulb that I had replaced my 75W bulb with a 250W one. And now it’s as bright as California Noon in here.
So now my co-workers are walking by my office and asking how my suntan is going, or poking their heads through my door to see why I brought a spotlight to work.
Note: this post has a very important update at the end that changes the entire post. Don’t miss that.
About a month ago I had the pleasure of (extremely briefly) meeting one of my childhood heroes. That’s me and him there. Note the subtle peace sign he’s managing in spite of the angle of his hand. For those of you who don’t know, that’s TobyMac. He is (was?) one third of dc Talk and in the last few years has branched out on his own, seemingly due to artistic differences, blah blah blah. I loved this guy because he was stylish, ultra-hip (especially with that fanny pack… not!) and a Christian. Plus, he gave me an alternative to the nasty rap I listened to in the late 80s and early 90s (Digital Underground, anyone?) because Toby’s lyrics actually encouraged me to respect women instead of using them like tools to accomplish an end. So he’s got that goin’ for him.
So now he releases a new album called Welcome to Diverse City, and after hearing the album I’m starting to think about Toby’s racial issues a bit more. Toby has been fighting racism with his music for at least 15 years, but part of me wonders if he’s actually taking it a little too far with his image, and pulling some kind of “reverse Michael Jackson” thing. After having a conversation with Camille, this stuff started to churn in my mind. It seems like Toby almost thinks he’s black, or wants to push his “blackness” to the forefront of everyone’s minds.
What do I have to support this claim? Let me point out a few things. For instance, the three stripes of color on the cover of Diverse City (and all over Toby’s site) are most immediately recognized as the “Pan-Africancolors“. I’m guessing those colors were chosen fairly purposefully. Also, one of the songs on Diverse City called “Fresher Than a Night at the W” contains these lyrics, which are somewhat typical of Toby’s writings about racism:
You’re probably sayin ‘Yo we’ve heard quite enough of you
With God and your rhymes and that freaky Jesus stuff you do
Like always pushing for that racial diversity
Leave us alone, we’re at home in our fantasy
I know a guy who knows a guy who has brown skin
Once in awhile if it so happens I’m around him’
Am I a bad person if I don’t have a bunch of black friends? I guess I don’t buy the argument that if you’re not friends with someone you don’t love them. Friendship and love are incredibly different things. I’m not saying Toby is definitely making that argument, but it feels like it on first listen.
As I was thinking about this, I recalled that in one of dc Talk’s early videos (for a song called “Walls”) Toby raps, “So whether black sheep, white sheep, or even swirl / God watches over all the sheep of the world.” On “black sheep” Toby points to Michael, on “white sheep” he points to Kevin, and on “swirl” he points to himself. I’m not kidding; go watch the video. It’s about 2:53 in.
In a song titled “Love is in the House” on his last album Momentum Toby actually comes straight out with it by singing, “Love is in the house, and the house is packed / So much soul I left the back door cracked / Daddy always said that I wish I was black / Love is in the house and the house is packed.”
Am I insane? Obviously if you just happen to hang with a crowd that is racially different from yourself, that’s no big deal, but doesn’t it seem equally racist to purposefully seek out other races simply because of their race? Isn’t that proposal attempting to solve a racist problem with a racist solution?
Update from the comments section 11/9/2008: “I just wanted to come back onto this thread, years later, and say that I now agree with David’s comment (below). Saying that a person has to act a certain way in accordance with their skin color is definitely racist because it takes their race into account when deciding what they should be and how they should act. That’s wrong, and I recant.”
Last night there was a big, hairy (at least in my mind) spider on the ceiling of our bedroom, right over the bed. So of course Stephanie sends the arachnaphobe in to rescue her. I got a paper towel, made sure it was nice and thick, and attempted to squish the thing, but it got out from under the towel (don’t they always?!?) and fell down towards the bed. All the action peaked Henson’s interest, so he was standing there looking up when it happened, and the spider never even hit the sheets. CHOMP! Henson’s reflexes are getting quite quick.
So this morning I’m getting dressed and I open my sock drawer, and what should greet me but this spider’s brother, sneaking across my Champions. When he got a look at my expression he made a break for Boxerland and I lost him in the darkness, so he may still be in there. I felt my feet tingling all day today whenever I thought of it! I bet he’s mentioning my unmentionables, that little twerp! Talk about an invasion of privacy! I’m OK with having another pair of eyes on my boxers, but not eight.
I think it’s about time we drop the Bug Bomb on those little suckas.
You know, if you put your hands in their “correct” positions on the keyboard, and then shift your right hand one space to the right (so your pointer finger is over the H instead of the J) and then begin touch-typing again, what comes out resembles Russian somewhat. Try it in the comments! Oh, and the “delete” key is still delete. I mean don’t hit “=” and expect us to translate that.
This is what happens when I stay up past midnight several nights in a row working on web development. Man, I’m so glad I love doing this or it would suck.
