Scary Cakes

Halloween has been in full force for several weeks now in all the stores. It’s been their first chance to decorate around a highly-concrete theme since July, it seems, and they’re really going for it. Cobwebs, spiders, zombies, mummies, vampires, witches, werewolves, voluptuous women poured into tight black dresses who are said to be eternally wed to Darkness. That kinda stuff.

Scary CakesBut the thing that has made me laugh the most in all of this is Scary Cakes. Hostess is getting into the spirit of things this year (and apparently also has in previous years though I’ve never paid attention) by creating something identical to the tongue, but entirely other to the mind. My favorite thing about these cakes is that they seem both positive and negative all at once. When confronted with the Scary Cakes, you are conflicted immediately and permanently. Do I want the Scary Cakes? What makes the Scary Cakes so scary? What will happen to me if and when I consume said Scary Cakes? Something scary, no doubt. But, not purely scary. There’s cake involved in this event. Do you see the horrible dilemma?

It also makes a great term of endearment. I’ve taken to calling Stephanie “scary cakes” lately. I think it suits her quite well!

My Flickr Photos

Steph admonished me today for never posting a link to my Flickr page. Not because the photos are so good, but more because it should be a part of my blog, and not relatively obscure, as it currently is.

Some day when I’m a big boy I’ll have a cool little sidebar thingy like Carrie where you’ll see my newest photos automatically, but not yet. Until then you’ll have to check it manually or subscribe to the RSS. Sorry.

I’ve just uploaded a few pics, including me practicing for Halloween, and two photos of the new wood flooring in our apartment–one without any furniture, and one with all the furniture moved back in. It’s so much better than the old, stained and smelly carpet we had. I’d imagine it had been there for at least 10 years by how it looked.

Comments!

OK, I’ve got the RSS feed for comments mostly working for those who know what to do with it. This feed will make it much easier to follow discussion on any particular post without visiting the site or the entry multiple times to see who else has responded.

This feed may get a little spam in it occasionally, but that spam will just as quickly be removed and deleted from the RSS. My apologies if you see some. I’ll do my best to keep it clean.

Also, I don’t want to fuse my comments RSS to my entries RSS. I don’t like it when people do that. It forces me to think “Wait, did I read this entry yet? Oh, yes, I did, it’s just that there’s a new 6th comment down there below the first 5 I’ve also already read, which is why the entry appears to be new.” It’s not convenient.

One small nice touch (although this may be common for comments RSS): when you click on the title of a particular comment, you’re not just taken to that entry, but to the actual comment itself. So each comment has a sort of “permalink” of its own. w00t.

Stanky

Stink in Peace. There’s a skunk that hangs out in our neighborhood in the evenings. You can smell him a bit on the breeze, and of course you can tell how far away he is by the intensity of the smell. His presence makes Henson growl softly as the odor wafts in through the windows of the living room.

Somebody ran over him yesterday. I made him a memorial desktop picture. Enjoy it, and remember him fondly.

Return of the Band Name

I’ve got a new cool band name. This one’s my favorite yet.

Psychopomp

I just absolutely love it on every level. Look it up. I think if I actually have a band, that’ll be the first name I pick. I thought of it tonight while reading an article on Wikipedia. Incidentally, if you head over there and hit Control-X on your keyboard, you’ll get a random article. Hit it again, and get another random article. It’s fun and true!

The Filing Cabinet

Most people have paperwork they have to keep but don’t need to have immediately at hand. I guess it’s part of this “adult life” thing I keep hearing so much hype about. Thus, the invention of the filing cabinet. Steph and I have one, of course, and we keep all our boring paperwork in there.

Recently we were thinking about death (we really have fun on the weekends, don’t we?) and Steph told me that if she died, there would be certain places I would have to call in order to get life insurance stuff and other details squared away. I told her I would never remember such a thing in that event, and wished there was an easy way to store and recall it later, come the need.

So she took the information, went to the filing cabinet, and put it in the “Warranties” folder.
