What you wanted: October 2005

Here are the most popular search strings people used when they eventually stumbled upon my site (or presumably some of the other blogs I host here) via Google, Yahoo and other search engines during the month of October. The count on the left is the number of people who found me using that search string. Apparently people are looking for The Becktionary and cool band names quite a lot. And 84 people wanted to find me, or someone with my name. Well, here I am.

I find it really funny that at least eight people were willing to settle for good band names. We don’t need anything cool. Just make it good. It’s also funny people somehow found me when looking for cool blog names. This blog, creatively titled “Blog.”, is about the worst-named blog in the entire universe. Please don’t ask me for cool blog names. You could use one of the band names, I suppose, but you’d at least have to make sure it wasn’t one of the ones stated in plural.

Note that “scary cakes” made the top 27 in a relatively short timespan! People want their scary cakes. Yes they do.

Happy Halloween

My costume was pretty standard, really. Please do share pictures or at least brief descriptions of what you dressed up as, if anything. Or perhaps something even vaugely Halloween-related. Would you remind me what I pay you people for? Honestly, throw me a bone here!

And remember, when Mr. Bigglesworth gets upset, people die!

Creating vs. Consuming

The act of creating is one of Man’s highest callings, and it’s something I try to encourage in myself. This blog is an expression of that. This is actually my 300th post. I really cherish the way that this blog encourages me to make something, even when it’s something stupid. Because making something is better than making nothing.

But tonight I’m not a maker, I’m just a taker. I’m not a creator, I’m just a consumer. I don’t feel like making anything. I can’t seem to force myself to do it. Nights like this are really frustrating to me because I know I’ve got something to create, and ten other somethings after that one, and I just don’t have the ability to get there mentally.

Scary Cakes

Halloween has been in full force for several weeks now in all the stores. It’s been their first chance to decorate around a highly-concrete theme since July, it seems, and they’re really going for it. Cobwebs, spiders, zombies, mummies, vampires, witches, werewolves, voluptuous women poured into tight black dresses who are said to be eternally wed to Darkness. That kinda stuff.

Scary CakesBut the thing that has made me laugh the most in all of this is Scary Cakes. Hostess is getting into the spirit of things this year (and apparently also has in previous years though I’ve never paid attention) by creating something identical to the tongue, but entirely other to the mind. My favorite thing about these cakes is that they seem both positive and negative all at once. When confronted with the Scary Cakes, you are conflicted immediately and permanently. Do I want the Scary Cakes? What makes the Scary Cakes so scary? What will happen to me if and when I consume said Scary Cakes? Something scary, no doubt. But, not purely scary. There’s cake involved in this event. Do you see the horrible dilemma?

It also makes a great term of endearment. I’ve taken to calling Stephanie “scary cakes” lately. I think it suits her quite well!

My Flickr Photos

Steph admonished me today for never posting a link to my Flickr page. Not because the photos are so good, but more because it should be a part of my blog, and not relatively obscure, as it currently is.

Some day when I’m a big boy I’ll have a cool little sidebar thingy like Carrie where you’ll see my newest photos automatically, but not yet. Until then you’ll have to check it manually or subscribe to the RSS. Sorry.

I’ve just uploaded a few pics, including me practicing for Halloween, and two photos of the new wood flooring in our apartment–one without any furniture, and one with all the furniture moved back in. It’s so much better than the old, stained and smelly carpet we had. I’d imagine it had been there for at least 10 years by how it looked.

Return of the Band Name

I’ve got a new cool band name. This one’s my favorite yet.

Psychopomp

I just absolutely love it on every level. Look it up. I think if I actually have a band, that’ll be the first name I pick. I thought of it tonight while reading an article on Wikipedia. Incidentally, if you head over there and hit Control-X on your keyboard, you’ll get a random article. Hit it again, and get another random article. It’s fun and true!
